Year 3 of Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe’s exciting project at Brading Roman Villa. This comprehensive long-term archaeological investigation has the potential to reveal a far greater understanding of early Roman life in Britain than is known at present.
PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVES 2010:
• Excavations at the rear of the car park, thought to provide evidence of Iron Age and early Roman occupation.
• The South Range. More excavations are necessary to discover whether the hall (excavated during the 2009 season) was single or triple aisled. There is also a need for confirmation that the hall had been demolished at the end of the 2nd Century at
the same time as the hall on the North Range (excavated 2008) was constructed.
• Inside the cover building. Sir Barry intends to investigate the room at the far north west of the West Range of buildings. Not much is known about the purpose of this part of the building and some exciting results may ensue.
Guided tours of the dig site available daily, £2 per adult, Children under 16yrs FREE.
